Shanti is doubly blessed to have both sunshine and water. Our water here comes from three natural springs. Shanti added a new UV water purification system in 2016. This eliminates pathogens without adding chlorine taste to the water. You may want to fill up your water bottles and take some home with you. We supply filtered water for our guests who prefer not to drink spring water. Either way, please know that we conserve our most precious resource of water as avidly as we drink it. Please no long showers or running water while washing dishes or brushing teeth; flush only when necessary.
Water Conservation: In 2015, California’s fifth drought year in a row. Elizabeth rose to the challenge of keeping her three natural springs producing by:
– Hiring OAEC’s permaculture expert Brock Adams to give her advice
– Placing sandbags at the exit of her pond to increase storage capacity
– Adding a new 5,000 gallon storage tank
– Utilizing rainwater catchment water for outdoor irrigation
– Adding new pipe and a pump to fully utilize existing water resources, and
– Requesting her guests to conserve water.
Shanti’s guests obliged by minimizing water usage while showering, washing dishes or teeth and not flushing unless necessary. As a result, we purchased 25,000 gallons of water in 2015 3,000 gallons in 2014, and 9,000 gallons in 2013. Shanti’s second year of business was 2015 with more people needing water. while Elizabeth was the solo water user in 2013. We continue to reduce our dependence on outside water as we grow.
Shanti is dedicated to providing you full luxury with the lowest possible environmental impact on this incredibly rich ecosystem in which you will vacation. To this end, we have installed 36 solar panels on our roof that provide much of our electricity. In the sunnier months, we generate enough power to sell it back to PG&E!
Low Use of Fossil Fuels
Shanti’s heaters will keep you toasty warm in an environmentally safe fashion. The Enviro electric heaters we use represent the most energy efficient technology available, using the natural upward flow of hot air to propel into your rooms. Better yet, our electric heaters are at least partially fueled by the solar panels on the roof.
Our septic system asks you to not overload it with anything other than TP. Women are invited to deposit TP from pee in the paper bag.
Shanti’s guests are offered the opportunity to recycle in specially designed garbage cans. All garbage is meticulously recycled by Elizabeth to reduce waste in the dump. We dispose of all batteries, mercury-containing fluorescent bulbs, electronics and metal separately. We practice pre-cycling by not purchasing goods that come enclosed in unnecessary packaging.
Elizabeth loves to grow and share produce! Her garden is full of organic tomatoes, kale, squash, basil, lettuce, spinach, chard, broccoli, peppers and beans. Shanti’s guests are welcome to harvest anything you need during your stay for free.
There is a composting bin in Shanti’s kitchen for guests to use for coffee grinds, vegetable and fruit scraps (no meat or bones please). Elizabeth collects all kitchen waste to be composted into next year’s fertilizer. Shanti has such good soil that Elizabeth doesn’t have to add anything else to her organic garden every year with bountiful results. Our guests next year will benefit from your food scraps!
Permaculture Landscape Design
On the Shanti “to do” list is building swales for water retention, adding more water storage tanks and planting native trees. We welcome suggestions from permaculture designers!
Shanti’s tiger striped bamboo flooring is both incredibly beautiful and renewable as a rapidly regenerated fiber resource. It is also entirely pet proof, having a Janko hardness rating of twice that of oak! Your dogs are welcome indoors without a worry.
No Toxic Cleaning Products
All cleaning products used at Shanti are environmentally sensible, such as Simple Green, a 50% vinegar solution and rags instead of paper towels. If you are chemically sensitive just tell us and we’ll do our best to make sure your room is as scent free as humanly possible.
No Dryer Energy Usage
Your linens are dried outdoors using the sun’s rays during most of the year. They are always “fluffed up” in the dryer for softness. This saves on 80% of energy use from the clothes dryer.
Reused Wood Products
Reused redwood planks have been used for Shanti’s outdoor deck. They came from an old water tank on the property. They have the type of beautiful old grain that you cannot find anymore.
Use of Local Products and Services
Shanti is a member of our local Redwood Credit Union. We shop at our local farmer’s market and locally owned supermarket. We employ local carpenters, electricians, spa repairmen, roofers, plumbers and handymen to keep jobs in our community. Our aim is to benefit our local economy by buying locally whenever possible.
